Episode #58 – Marvel Phase 4, Here’s the Door

Marvel Phase 4

Right after we finished recording Episode #57, news came down the wire about the MCU Phase 4 from San Diego Comic-Con. Because of course this important information did. Now that we’ve had a month to mull it over, we’re more than ready to talk about it.

So here it all is for you: what was announced, our feelings about each, and our excitement levels.

Jen also gets into why she finally unsubscribed from Justice League Dark. More important, where she was when she ceremoniously hit that unsubscribe button on Comixology.

As for me, well, I have feelings about Hickman’s path for the X-Men.

My sincere apologies for taking so long to listen to this podcast when I have been fully aware of its existence for years. Doing so more than a year and a half after this last episode was recorded does give me the benefit of hindsight, at least. So I have that going for me. 🙂

First, I also loved The Rook and enjoyed Stiletto. So kudos for the mention of those books.

Second, it’s interesting to be reminded how the pandemic changed my perspective on streaming services. I was in your camp of not really wanting to pay for too many back in 2019. I thought they’d be like frozen yogurt shops were about 10 years ago — a huge wave of folks trying to cash in, then only the strong surviving. Things still may still play out that way, but I haven’t heard of any of them being in any imminent financial danger. I think the only major one we don’t have is Paramount, and I’ve appreciated getting to watch everything from Carnival Row and The Boys to The Mandalorian and WandaVision. We may eventually end up divesting of some, but at least until I get my second vaccination shot I’m glad to have them.

Third and finally, I think Hickman did save X-Men by restoring two things — their relevance and their “otherness.” After watching them muddle along for years, it’s been wonderful to see them matter in the overall 616 universe again and for people to have a reason to fear and distrust mutants again.

So, when is Episode 59 scheduled to air?
