Nightwing #14 Review – Down, but not Out

Nightwing 14 reviewLike any good superhero comic, it did not take long for trouble to find Nightwing. Within hours of his arrival, he stumbled across a wrongful arrest for murder. Now that he knows who the murderer is, he’s been framed for an attempted murder on Blüdhaven’s mayor. He’s on the lamb, he has no real allies, and I’m sure a part of him wishes he had a contact like Commissioner Gordon to help him out of this jam. Well, he sort of does in the form of a sassy, has no fucks to give detective. She hates “tights” (superheros), but she also wants to solve cases accurately.

Her terms are pretty fair. All she asks is for the police to receive full credit for the arrest and that he put up with her jabs. For all that, his name, Shawn’s name, and Gorilla Grimm’s name are cleared.

I was very disappointed to learn that the murderer was Mr. Nice, whom I suspected all along. I had hoped there would be a twist later or perhaps a setup for something better. I got my wish upon learning that Cherry, the head of Blüdhaven tourism, was part of Mr. Nice’s scheme to punish all evil-doers and frame past evil-doers for their crimes.

That I can say I most definitely did not see coming.

Of course Nightwing, with Defacer and Detective Svoboda, took down Mr. Nice and cleared the names of everyone who was wrongfully arrested. As requested, the Blüdhaven police force received full credit for unmasking the true culprit.

Now that Nightwing has learned there is no black and white, and it’s okay to work in the gray, will he go back to Gotham? No, he won’t. After all, there’s new tail to chase in this city. And yes, my eyes did roll as he looked to Shawn Tsang as his next lady love. Who knows, maybe a former villain will be good for him. I still want him to return to Starfire. Maybe Damian can set that up? Anything is possible in the world of DC.
