Uncanny Avengers #20 Review – Elsewhere in Marvel…
While most of the mutants are battling inhumans, the mutants that make up the former Avengers Unity team are busy battling one another. That darn Red Skull has most of them under his control. Deadpool is their only hope. Before Rogue set out to confront Red Skull, she told Deadpool to round up Gambit, Magneto, and any other Avengers who would help. Magneto is busy, Gambit said thanks, but no thanks, leaving Deadpool to improvise. He was able to phone a few friends, but the odds are against them. They have to stop Red Skull all while fighting the rest of Unity team without permanently hurting them.
Wong has agreed to help, Dr. Strange said he’s on his way, and Spider-Man, the one who quit the team over Deadpool, has come in to help. For a guy who seems to really hate Deadpool, the two have some of the best witty banter. Glad to know that Parker is mature enough to put childish feelings aside when it comes to saving the world.
Red Skull is holed up in the Avengers’ own mansion, sending out Johnny Torch, Doctor Voodoo, Quicksilver, Synpase, and the Wasp to do his dirty work for him. Deadpool and friends have to fight their own friends in order to reach the Skull. It doesn’t take them long to realize that they won’t get anywhere until they take care of Herr Schmidt. Their battles in the meantime, though, are rather hilarious.
Right after this lovely scene, Spider-Man and Deadpool had their own version of skeet shooting, using Parker’s web cartridges as skeet. I really hope Spider-Man changes his mind and comes back to the Unity team, because this dynamic duo needs to stay together, especially when they come up with a power move like this one:
That’s the last moment of comedy. When Deadpool breaches the mansion, he meets little resistance until Rogue. I always forget how viscerally violent Rogue can be, but never is. Her fight with Deadpool is just awful. I cringed every panel. The fact that Red Skull is eating meat in just the next room over makes it worse. I’m getting chills, now, just thinking about it.
At least I won’t have too long to wait. Next week we’ll have the next chapter of this crazy arc.
