Uncanny Avengers 16 Review – What’s Worse Than Hulk? Zombie Hulk.
How are the Avengers doing without Steve Rogers? Depending upon your point of view, they’re doing just fine or they’re doing abysmally. Rogue and Deadpool brought them all together under the guise that they were still a team, and it wasn’t until all Hell broke loose in Japan that Rogue admitted Rogers has dissolved the team. I’m sure they all have questions, but in case you forgot what happened at the end of the last issue, the Hand resurrected the Hulk and kind of made him a very angry zombie. The team is working together very well, hence how they’re doing fine without Rogers. At the same time, they’re battling a zombie Hulk, and they’re all rather certain they’re going to die here, along with most of mankind.
Thankfully, no one has lost their sense of humor.
Of course they aren’t able to defeat the Hulk in just one issue. That said, Doctor Voodoo thinks he knows how to send Banner’s spirit back to the underworld. Quicksilver takes him to an abandoned island where he can set up his rituals, and the rest have to figure out how to lead the Hulk there at the right time and keep him away from the populated cities. This is possibly one of the biggest messes any Avenger has found themselves in, save Ultron. It’s a good thing we have Deadpool to keep the humor going.
At the same time, he’s not the only character with the witty remarks. I mentioned this with my review of the latest Batgirl and the Birds of Prey, that I’m deeply enjoying these comics that approach dark issues, tell deep stories, and yet keep the humor alive and well. In the case of Uncanny Avengers, it’s a given that Deadpool would take on that role, and he most certainly does. However, he’s not the only one, and I’m grateful for that because only having Deadpool’s snark would come across as forced. This comic series is too great to deal with forced wisecracks that only fit in because, well, that’s our Deadpool!
The Uncanny Avengers feels like an ensemble sit-com a lot of the time, but not something as ridiculous as what you’d see on network prime time. The first Avengers film by Joss Whedon is a better example. It was an ensemble cast, it was as serious as a superhero movie can be, and yet it was light-hearted enough that everyone had humorous lines, even Maria Hill.
I’m not sure if they’ll be able to stop Hulk in the next issue either, because he is rather angry, even for the Hulk. I also hope this isn’t an attempt to bring Bruce Banner back to life. I’m sure it will happen eventually, because that’s what comics do. But I don’t want it to happen now, and not this way. Let poor Bruce Banner finally be at peace.
Also, I’d like to note that I wish my phone could call Cable via voice command.
