Superwoman #7 Review – More Questions Than Answers
Since issue #2, Superwoman has been following one single story arc: “Who Killed Superwoman?” The Superwoman it is referring to is Lois Lane, who died at the end of the first issue. At the time we didn’t know exactly what happened or who killed her. We still don’t exactly know what happened other than calling out to Clark and saying she now understands. It wasn’t long, however, that we learned her killer was a Bizzaro Clone created by Lena Luthor. Since then, It’s been an absolutely insane ride with Ultrawoman, Lex, Man of Steel, and countless others. It’s so crazy, I didn’t know how long I was going to be able to take it.
I was elated to see on the very first page that this issue was the conclusion for the arc. Finally! Let’s wrap things up, find out what really happened to Lois, and possibly move on from here. While this issue was indeed the conclusion, it was not the conclusion for everything I thought it would be. It was simply the conclusion to Ultrawoman’s takeover. This definitely needed to happen, of course, but I was looking for something a little more all-encompassing. Instead, thanks to the very end, I have more questions.
Sad as it sounds, I don’t have much to say about Lena’s end. Bitch needed to go, and Lana handled it with class and grace. What was far more interesting was how Lex was finally freed and the very very end, which I will spoil. Apologies in advance.
At the end of last issue, Atomic Skull and Bizarro-S released Lex from his temporal prison. Atomic Skull agreed to help Lex escape from the building if he did one thing for him. After quite a bit of Lex puffing out his chest and saying he didn’t Skull’s help, Mercy and Lana talked sense into the narcissist. The best part was what Skull wanted, which was simply an apology for his treatment. I did snigger a bit watching Lex hem and haw about apologizing to anyone. Second best was Kryptonite Man’s suggestion for how Lex could walk again.
Sounds like Lex’s armor uses Windows software.
The big question I asked last issue was the status of Lois Lane. Lois’s appearance to Lana has always seemed like a psychic manifestation, something that Lana was holding on to. Since Bizarro-S can see her, there’s obviously quite a bit more to it. Lois confronts Bizarro-S about it in the beginning, but we see nothing about it until the very end. After Lena’s defeat, Lana sees Lois coming towards her, and naturally she assumes it’s her ghost Lois. However, it’s not; it’s a real, living and breathing Lois Lane. It doesn’t seem to be the Other Earth Lois either, and she doesn’t really look like the ghost Lois we’ve seen for awhile.
Before Lana can fully react to Lois’ presence, Lana starts to dissolve the same way Lois did in the first issue. She even says the exact same things Lois did—calling out Clark’s name and saying she now understands. As Lana’s friends cry out, demanding to know what is happening to her, Lois says very calmly that she’s going through the same thing that happened to her. Lana’s fate will be concluded next month. I’ll believe that when I see it.
While the bad guys were defeated and Metropolis was saved, we still haven’t learned a thing about what happened to Lois or what her ghost was. Now we have these additional questions:
- Why does Lois look differently than before?
- What do Lois and Lana understand at the times of the deaths?
- Why do they both call for Clark?
- Does Lois still have her superpowers?
Now I need to wait a whole other month for these answers. I wouldn’t be surprised if Lana’s story really is not concluded next issue, either. As much as I hate to admit it, the suspense is killing me! Damn you, DC!
