Supergirl #6 Review – From Cyborg Zombies to What?

Supergirl 6 reviewFor the end of the Cyborg Zombie Supermen arc, it was rather uneventful. Kara swapped banter with her Cyborg father, she saved humans from getting devoured, and she teamed up with Cat Grant to shut them all down. She even found a way to send the floating city of Argos into the sea without hurting anyone. Supergirl has officially saved the day, and her “father” is in DEO custody. There’s really not much to review, as no big revelations took place, no twists occurred, and there wasn’t a lead-in to a future arc. I thought about skipping this issue entirely for review, because it was rather ho-hum for so much build-up.

However, on the very last panel, the editors placed a teaser for the next story arc/issue, which they often do. This one caught my eye and it wasn’t a good thing. I stared at it in horror, hoping that I was reading it incorrectly. I zoomed in, made sure my eyes were understanding the font, and blinked several times. No matter what I did, I knew I was reading the teaser correctly.

The next arc will be about “Werewolves of Krypton.”

What is going on here? First cyborg zombies, now werewolves? I will drop my subscription if we get vampires as well. That seems to be the flow, right? Let’s go from one teenage trend to the next.

Look, I know Supergirl is about a teenager who will undoubtedly appeal to teenage girls. But do teenage girls still want to read about zombies and werewolves, or even vampires? Is that the only archetype of villain Kara can battle? Forget typical villains that might run through National City; let’s make supernatural enemies from her former planet. I thought this cyborg zombie arc was about Kara letting go of Krypton, letting her come to grips with her new life and her new family. I’m not sure why she has to continue to hold on to Krypton and its ilk.

This was one of the biggest problems with the pre-Rebirth Nightwing comics as well. The DC teams never let Dick get past his parents’ deaths and/or Hayley’s Circus. It’s been refreshing to see what Tim Seeley has done with both Grayson and Nightwing.

Why can’t Supergirl be as refreshing? Would it seem to contrived? Would it not make sense for National City? She is with the DEO, so I don’t know why she can’t be dealing with aliens from other planets instead of Krypton.

I’ll wait and see how this “Werewolves of Krypton” plays out before making any snap judgments, but this comic is on notice. My resignation is typed up, I just need a reason to send it.
