Inhumans vs. X-Men #3 Review – Best Laid Plans…
The X-Men put all of their eggs into one basket with their plan to destroy the second Terrigen cloud. Forge is driving that basket with Logan as his bodyguard. If this plan fails, they have nothing else to fall back on to stop the Terrigen from completely immersing the planet. Once the Terrigen does so, it will render Earth as completely inhabitable for mutants. Everything literally rides on Forge’s invention. One would think, therefore, that they would have a backup plan.
But why create a backup plan when you’re so sure the plan is foolproof? They’ve put all the super powerful inhumans out of commission. It was a coordinated, super surprise attack. No one was killed, and the mutants will release the inhumans once the cloud is gone. It’s unfortunate, then, that the X-Men didn’t count their chickens before they hatched.
The problem with inhumans is that more pop up all the time thanks to the cloud. Not every inhuman is part of New Attilan, and mutants haven’t faced every inhuman. Two inhumans escaped their attack on New Attilan, and while they were concerned about the refugees, they didn’t consider them a real threat. There is something about hubris and underestimating your foe that will always bite one in the end. Perhaps it was just two inhumans who escaped, but that’s all they needed to take down Logan and destroy Forge’s machine. That’s all they needed to reach out to Ms. Marvel and summon more inhumans to help. They didn’t all live in New Attilan, after all.
The captured inhumans aren’t sitting idly in their limbo prison, either. Medusa seems to have found a way to break out, and Karnak has broken free of Jean Grey’s psychic hold. He’s still trapped in The World, but he’ll find a weakness and a way to escape. That’s kind of Karnak’s shtick.
This entire scenario has me on the edge of my seat. I’m definitely on #TeamXMen, but they’ve allowed Emma Frost to cloud their confidence too blindly. Why wasn’t a backup plan devised in case Forge was captured?
The clock is ticking for both the inhumans and the X-Men, mostly the X-Men. They can’t afford slip-ups like this one. I’m amazed at how intense this story arc is, when we’re only halfway through the Inhumans vs. X-Men mini-series. I’m hanging on, because this ride be bumpy.
