Uncanny Avengers #25 Review – Filler That Really Isn’t

Uncanny Avengers 25 reviewUnity Team is trapped in Manhattan in the Dark Dimension. Wasp forced Rogue to deal with a truth she isn’t ready for, and she responded like any mature adult by running away. Sure she said it was to help other people, but it was running away. She tries to ignore Wasp asking her to be the leader by focusing on Shocker and Scorpia robbing a bank. The lights are out, there’s no power, demons are running amok, so who wouldn’t rob a bank?

Oh there’s also the little matter of a demon possessing Doctor Voodoo. We like our Doctor Voodoo possession-free, thank you. Torch, Synapse, and Wasp all try to keep the demon at bay without hurting Jericho’s body either. Quicksilver is busy not being helpful to the Underground or Unity. It’s a gift he seems to have.

So while the others are bonding, Rogue is sulking. Seems to be another day in the Secret Empire filler comics. Then again, it’s really not. Instead, it’s a brilliant “coming of age” story for Rogue. Sure, she’s not an awkward teenager wondering where she fits in the world, but there’s no statute of limitations when it comes to growing as a person.

Jan only pointed out that Unity Team, if it’s going to survive, will need a leader. Ever since Cap dissolved the team, which I’m sure they’re all grateful for by now, Rogue has been the unofficial leader. She hasn’t wanted to admit that or even accept it. She saw it as a time when she knew they had to stop the Hand from controlling zombie Hulk, and it was the same for charging after Red Skull. Everyone else was in his thrall, and she stepped up when there was no one else. Now there could be someone else, but she’s already proven herself as a capable leader, even though she doesn’t think she is.

I’m not sure if she realized she is a capable leader after leading two villains to defeat a horde of massive monsters. That whole exchange was hysterical, for the record.

Uncanny Avengers 25 review

Or maybe she realized it when Synapse called for her help in returning Jericho to his body. Yes, Synapse called her because she needed Rogue’s insane strength. However, she also called her because Rogue is the one they can count on. Whether she thinks she can or not, Rogue is the leader Unity Team needs and deserves.

I won’t get to see Rogue step into her role in Secret Empire, though, because the rest of this tale is spinning off into one of the Secret Empire side stories. The next issue of Uncanny Avengers will take place AFTER Secret Empire. This leads me to wonder if UA will spoil SE. If they mention any part of it at all, even if it’s to Deadpool or Beast, it could be a huge spoiler. I’m getting the feeling that Secret Empire, especially with its extension, has disrupted storylines and planning other Marvel teams already had in place.
