Uncanny Avengers #24 Review – So That’s Why They’re Not Part of the Underground

Uncanny Avengers 24 reviewWhen we last saw Unity squad, Deadpool stepped into Stevil’s limousine and the rest of the team was gearing up to help Doctor Voodoo stop his brother. A lot has happened since then, especially in the world of Secret Empire. We’ve barely seen their presence at all during the battles. I think I might have seen Rogue during one, and that’s a big might. Then again, most of the X-Men have been rather absent from the on-going war, which is weird for a school based in New York itself. But it is even weirder to not have Unity team fighting Hydra, especially since many of them are former Avengers and Steve was their leader. They kind of have a dog in this fight.

Perhaps they have been in one of the other four Secret Empire series I refuse to buy into, but for the lone Uncanny Avengers faithful, this is the first time we’ve really seen the team in action. Turns out they’re trapped in New York in the dark dimension, the same one that is keeping Dr. Strange busy. Or are there two of these domes? Who knows, but that is where most of Unity team is hanging out. Only two absent are Cable (he went back to his time) and Quicksilver. Quicksilver was not with them when the trap sprung; he’s actually been running around with the Underground. He was even at the Thanksgiving dinner Pymtron hosted

Regardless, the team is trapped with demons from the dark dimension, and they have no idea how to escape. The only plan is to help as many people as possible, but there’s no real leadership. There’s not even a solid plan. Their situation and lack of direction only worsens when Doctor Voodoo becomes possessed by the demons of the dark realm.

I’m not sure what to think of this issue at all. It feels like someone at Marvel recently realized that the Unity squad needs to play a part in Secret Empire because of the reasons I listed above. Then they pulled a hasty, “we gotta do something!” and ordered someone to work them in. Basically, they discovered they have dustbunnies on the floor right before people are coming over, and they swept them under the rug of the dark dimension. When someone asks, hey, where did those dustbunnies go? All Marvel has to do is lift up the rug. See! They’ve been here the whole time! We didn’t forget about them at all, no siree.

How many more weeks until Secret Empire ends and we can go back to our regularly scheduled program?
