The Mighty Thor #13 Review – DnD, Anyone?

The Mighty Thor 13 ReviewMalekith can’t stop wreaking havoc across the realms. First he topples a corporate empire run by a Minotaur, and now he’s kidnapped the Queen of the Light Elves and gone on a Light Elf murdering spree. The current Thor refuses to take this lying down, and she’s recruited a fallen angel (Angela) and Sif (which should piss off Odin even further) to stop Malekith at all costs.

The band has gone as far as to recruit members across all of the realms, including a dwarf from Nidavellier, a Light Elf, a troll, a wood wizard from Vanaheim, Roz from SHIELD (Midgard), and a giant from Jotunheim. Titanya is not one of the Frost Giants, because obviously none of them would be members of the League of Realms.

Yes, I said League of Realms. Apparently this is a very old concept that was established in Thor: God of Thunder #13-17, so saith the “League of Editors.” As much as I want to roll my eyes at this idea, I have to admit Thor cannot hope to take on the Dark Elf army alone, even with a sentient hammer.

The build-up seems pretty exciting, but the issue itself has a lot of nothing going on. This issue is essentially the setup for the League of Realms, so there’s a meeting, a bit of swearing oaths, acknowledgment that they’re all committing treason by reforming this League, and then a botching of a plan to save the Queen.

Like every new team, they haven’t fully figured out how to work together yet. This isn’t the most opportune time to work out the kinks, as they literally have the life of an entire realm hanging in the balance. The true battle will happen next issue, when I’m sure they’ll magically figure out how to work together and work together well.

It’s not unusual that certain arcs resonate with us and others do not. Not every arc can be a winner, and thanks to a little something called “personal preferences,” not every arc will appeal to everyone. I can’t put my finger on why, but this arc doesn’t stir my hammer to life. It feels so cookie cutter from a typical comic book team story. It doesn’t help that I’m reading two other comic series about newly formed teams–Titans and Teen Titans. I sincerely hope that this current Mighty Thor arc appeases other readers and I’m alone in my feelings of blah. No idea when this story will end, but I look forward to its conclusion.

But I did giggle at Roz calling the team the Tolkien Avengers.
