Cyborg #6 Review – Love at First Byte

Cyborg 6 reviewCyborg is seriously having a series of bad days. He’s planted with a virus, he learns that his father wiped a portion of his memories, and last issue he’s cajoled into creating another cyborg being. Just wait until he learns that his father has been kidnapped and replaced with an android. That should go over swell. This month we’re dealing with Cyborg’s feelings on transforming CIA agent Scarlett Taylor into a cyborg like him. Now that she’s awake, she has to come to terms with what she is, who she is, and what she has lost in the process. There’s really no better person to help her cope than Vic, which he does on both a psychological and physical level.

And then it goes…even more physical. I couldn’t help but compare Taylor’s transformation to Bride of Frankenstein. Thank goodness it isn’t. I might have seen the back of my head from rolling my eyes so hard.

On one level, Cyborg needs his Bride of Frankenstein. There’s finally someone else on this Earth that understands what he went through. He can share his glimpses into the cybernetic world that no other human can see. Someone else understands what it’s like to be him, from the inside out. It’s hardly surprising that his training sessions turned romantic. It’s a little cliché, but not surprising.

That said, John Semper, Jr. used this cliché to drive home an even sadder theme: Cyborg’s loneliness. He’s been struggling since the first issue to understand himself and what he has become. Now he thinks he’s found the perfect companion to completely understand him and what he is. It’s a shame he doesn’t see how much Sarah thinks he’s amazing. Sadly, aren’t we all subject to this? We never see how fantastic we are, and thus, we never see other people seeing us that way?

Am I saying we’re all Cyborg? Why yes. Yes I am.

I’m also saying you must read this issue to the very end. I cannot wait for next month.
